Estonian Statistical Society was founded on September, 30th, 1992 in the conference hall of Tartu University Library. Its first statute was adopted and the management board was elected there.
The main goal of activities of the Estonian Statistical Society (ESS) has been integration of different people working in different areas of statistics. With this aim a series of national one- and two-days conferences has been organized. During the recent years the following seminars have taken place:
1995, March 23-24, Tartu. Statistics in Social Sciences (24 reports, about 60 participants)
1995, September 19-20, Tallinn. Official Statistics (18 reports, about 100 participants). The general meeting of ESS was also held on this occasion. Details of these two meetings can be found in ARIS 96 (page 90).
1996, June 3-8, Tartu. Tartu Conference on Computational Statistics and Statistical Education. A workshop on Statistics at School was also held (co-organizer Institute of Mathematical Statistics, University of Tartu) (40 reports, about 80 participants, including 35 foreign guests from 19 countries). The working language of the conference was English. During the workshop the reports and discussions were interpreted.
1996, November 18, Tallinn. Statistics and Quality (20 reports, about 200 participants).
1997, April 17-18, Rakvere. Medical Statistics and Registers (16 reports and about 70 participants).
Full reports of these conferences have been published in the journal Information Bulletin of Estonian Statistical Society, published twice a year. Since 1993, 7 issues have been published, one is in process. Besides, two collections of papers of the Tartu International Conference will be published - one, in Estonian, for teachers from Estonia and the second Proceedings in English for international distribution.
In 1995 a new Council was elected: Professor Villem Tamm, docent Tõnu Kollo, docent Ebu Tamm, Vice-Director of Statistical Office Ülo Randaru, Helina Vigla and Reet Malbe. As President, Professor Ene-Margit Tiit was re-elected for the following three years.

2007, January 25.26, Tallinn, the 19-th Conference of ESS Statistical Literacy  (15 reports
 
2008, April 15-16, Tallinn, the 20-th Conference of ESS Statistics of Quality and Quality of Statistics  (13 reports, 169 participants)
 
2009 , March 24-25, Tallinn, the 21-st Conference of ESS Registers and National Census  (20 reports, 200 participants)
 
2010, April 13-14, , the 22-nd Conference of the ESS Statistics and Life Sciences  will be held in Tartu.
 
On March 25, 2009,  first two Honorary Members of ESS were elected:
